Ideas on how to clean and organize the home

Learning about French Linens

Earlier last month another favorite author and blogger that I admire wrote a blog post about french linens. She just recently returned from her MONTH long trip to France! Gosh, I was foaming at the mouth while following her on Instagram looking at all of her pictures and watching her videos.

What a dream! She also got to stay with the wonderful Sharon Santoni (another great author and blogger) at her swoon worthy chateau in Normandy. But let’s get back on track with french linens.

This was an outstanding post! So informative and enticing.

One thing that I learned was that it is environmentally friendly. Linen is biodegradable. That’s interesting.

Shannon talked about how hypo allergenic it is, that it lasts longer than cotton (good to know), is stronger than cotton, get’s softer with each wash, and is extremely absorbent. Great facts!

Shannon also gave a wonderful list on tips on how to care for your linens:

Tips About Buying & Caring for Linen

  • If purchasing vintage linen, make sure you open the entire sheet to see if there are holes or marks. Often the marks can come out, but you will either want to determine if you can darn (fix) the holes or pass on the sheet as it will only get worse with wear and wash.
  • Vintage sheets are usually only large enough for a queen or double. If you find a sheet that has a seam down the middle, this is absolutely fine as it shows that they combined (usually hand-stitched) two smaller sheets together to preserve them.
  • Often on vintage sheets you will see the family name on the bottom left or right edge as the sheets would be washed by the staff in a wash house along a river, and if the sheets were accidentially swept away or mixed up with other sheets, they would be able to determine whose sheet was whose.
  • With vintage linen, the top sheet will contain most often a monogram (see in my image – 3rd below), and it is placed on the very top of the sheet (the top sheets are very long to enable you to fold back about 1-2 feet over the top of the blanket).
  • Most vintage pillow cases are only sized for Euro (large square) or the long bolster pillow that lays behind the two Euro pillows (you can see how Sharon made the bed below with this approach). I saw oodles of bolster linen pillowcases at the brocante boutiques.
  • Price for vintage linens at markets – the average I spent was 35-40 Euros (a sheet).
  • Vintage French linens do not have available a fitted sheet; you simply use a flat sheet and tuck to fit.
  • New linen French bedding makes available the standard pillowcases and fitted sheets we are accustomed to.
  • Line dry only – preferrably outside under the sun as the sun will keep them white AND if you can, Sharon shared to lay them flat out on grass as the chlorophyll helps keep the sheets white as well.
  • Yep, you will have to iron them, but your body will thank you with a deep sleep.

And last but certainly not least she shared where to find the best linens. I never thought that Etsy would be a great place but it is. Here is her link to the shops.
I must admit I am really loving this linen dust ruffle coverlet below. I may have to save for this purchase!
Isn’t it gorgeous? There were so many linen items that I wanted. I even looked for linen aprons but we will see.

A Cleaning Habit Poll

Sometimes I wonder if I am a really bad neat freak. My daughter’s friend was over one weekend and I was washing some cabinets doors and the front of the fridge. They had a little dust and dog drool on them (gotta love those boxers!). So she was watching me clean and said, “Wow….really, your house doesn’t have to be perfect!” Honestly, I wanted to drop kick her in the face but I just calmly said, “I like to clean and I like a lovely home.” Geez! Me wiping down a few doors was that bad?

I don’t know…. but I saw this fun poll on House Beautiful and wanted to share it with everyone. It was quite interesting. I hope you all enjoy it and have a Happy Mother’s Day weekend.

I am taking my mother to the Sassafras Tea Room for their Mother’s Day Brunch event! We are both excited and this will be the first tea room that my mother has ever visited. I hope that I can take pictures and I hope that we both enjoy it!

Have a great weekend!

A Closet Update

This past week my husband was working with a client on a closet renovation. She was having her closet re-done and was getting rid of some of her cabinets.

Can you believe that she was throwing these away? I couldn’t believe it and neither could my husband. So he gathered them up and brought them home.
I was not expecting this so it was a pleasant surprise. These are my original shoe shelves in my walk-in closet.

My shoes were piled high on these shelves.
This is what it looked liked after removing my shelves and adding the cabinets.
I still can’t believe that she was going to throw these away!! It’s incredible!

I love all the drawers. I can add jewelry.

Or my silk scarves! I actually love the way this looks and will be leaving these in there.
I found this cute little blue and white ginger jar at Homegoods this weekend!

I put some blue and white pieces at the top also. I do adore the way it looks and I am so grateful to my husband and his hard work and the gracious client who gave them to me.  Thank you!

My Wash

I thought I would do a quick post about how I take care of my laundry.

I use Purex detergent. You can find it in most stores. My family has very sensitive skin and have clawed themselves whenever I use Tide, Gain, etc. This brand is very reasonable and I can use all the scents without irritating my family’s skin.
I also love to use the Clorox Ultimate Care Bleach. It is very gentle on my whites and cleanses very well. You can also find it in most stores as well.
For stain removal I use the Oxiclean Spray and the powder. My husband and I LOVE this! It works well on everything! It even gets out blood which is wonderful. I just spray it on and let the fabric sit overnight, put it in the normal wash and the stains come right out. It’s great! I love Bounce dryer sheets. They help the clothes smell so good and sometimes I put them in my suitcase when we travel.
I use this on my delicate items. It smells wonderful and works great! I wrote about it here if you wish to read it.
Afterwards, I fold and put everything away. I have to fold my towels like this because my linen closets are so small. I am hoping that in the near future I can come up with this more inventive ways to have more space. I do hope that you enjoyed this post!

Organization and Cleaning ~ 2018

With the year beginning most people have lots of resolutions. Organizing being one of them. I just thought that I would share some of my posts from last year about the wonderful book that I read called the Butler Speaks. I had lots of readers on this series and just thought that I would share those links again. Enjoy!!!!

Teacup Organizing

I really miss Martha Stewart being on cable T.V. I know that she has her Potluck Show with Snoop Dogg but what I miss is her old show with all the learning material that she shared. I learned so MUCH from those shows. At that time I was a young wife and new mother so the Martha Stewart Show was my cookbook, my sewing book, organizational book, I mean you name it!

I often find myself going to her website and looking for old vintage Martha Stewart shows on Youtube. There is a guy by the name of Joseph Patz who has a vintage Martha Stewart channel on Youtube if you are interested.

I was looking at my messy and unorganized cabinet recently. I stood and thought I need to organize this. What came to mind was Martha’s episode called, “How to Display a Collection in a Cabinet.”

I immediately started stacking my teacups in all my cabinets and it looked so orderly and wonderful that I had to share it.

Before the stacking….

After….
Better, much better!

Doesn’t it look great? And what’s so funny is that my cups are from the Martha Stewart Collection! I just love it. You can watch the video here if you are interested. Happy Organizing!

Home Memories

This is just a small post about life memories. I love keeping memories and my daughter loves going through the boxes that I have of all her photos, artwork, graded papers, birthday party mementos, and clothes.

I don’t have much from my childhood so I wanted to make sure that I captured my daughter’s life as much as I could. I also have kept all of my cards from her and ornaments. Keeping memories, I believe is another way of having a beautiful life. It shows your children and family that you care enough to document your life with them. If you keep things continue to collect.

I can’t wait until I have some grandchildren to share all of the memories that I have. Enjoy!!!

I keep most of our memories in boxes like this.

In here I have all of my cards and I write the year on the back of each one. Something I learned from my mother in law.
In this box I kept some of Lauren’s baby clothes and her first costume! I love looking at these and seeing how small she was. Boy, does the time really fly!
I have kept all of Lauren’s birthday cards and artwork. She will love this when she gets older.
For each school year I take a photo and make her write down a few things. I also keep some of her work, report cards, drawings, and photos with friends from each year. She will enjoy looking at these with her kids and talk about her school years in the future.
Well I hope that you have enjoyed this post and that it has inspired you to continue to document your life as well.
