Canvas Grocery Totes
Last year I decided to cease from using plastic bags at the grocery store. I don’t know what came over me. I just decided that it was pointless and that I hated bringing those bags home every week when I can just get some canvas ones.
My family and I have also started recycling last year. We use a lot of plastic water bottles and I saw a commercial last year of a huge whale being cut open (after it died) and nothing but plastic bottles fell out of him! I felt horrible! I know I can’t save the world but I am hoping that with us recycling I can at least save one whale. Right?
And honestly, I feel good going to the recycling bins and dropping off our bags of bottles, paper, and cans. I feel like we are doing our part to save the world. Is it elegant to recycle? I hope so! But anyway, I wanted to share the lovely canvas totes that I found at T.J. Maxx.

I, too, have been bringing my own bags to the grocery store for the past year or so. It feels better not to waste so many plastic bags. I also try not to accept a bag for a few things at the drug store/Target etc. if possible and put them in my tote/purse.
The only place I have run into trouble with this is at Walmart. It seems that the checkout people there are so used to the rotating plastic bag holder that bringing one's own bags throws them off a bit.

Oh Kathleen! I thought it was just me! Whenever I bring my canvas totes to Walmart, they have no problem displaying their frustration about me having them! It's like my totes are a real inconvenience to them. That is why are am slowing started to change my grocery list and find other places to shop!

Cities in Silicon Valley have had bans on the thin plastic bags for several years now, so I have a variety of re-usable bags, but they are not as attractive as the canvas ones you have. I will have to keep my eyes open for something better. I like the idea of canvas as it is washable when the bags get food stains on them. Typically the re-usable bags offered here are heavy, "plastic-like" bags, or thin fabric (more like fusible lining material) that can be hard to clean.

I heard that cities in California have bans on plastic bags. I don't know what people here in Indiana would do if we had a ban. They would probably be upset but I happen to love it. And yes mine are washable! I hope that you can find some soon!
