Decor Evolving

Dear June,

Please don’t go by so fast! I hope the Lord hears my request. I am ready for it to get a little warmer here but not humid. I hate the humidity! I don’t have many plans for the weekend. I did just order my first etiquette book! I know, I know… I don’t own one. Well, I don’t own an official etiquette book and I felt like it was time. So I ordered the Emily Posts Etiquette, 19th Edition: Manners for Today.

I am really excited to see it and read it! Of course, I will share it once it arrives. In today’s post I wanted to share a recent photo that I found in my phone’s photo gallery.

This was our living room in our first home in 2008! It’s funny, my husband and I were just talking about this house. I still remember the day we closed when we purchased it. I couldn’t believe that I was a homeowner at the age of 25! It was a great feeling.

When I look at this photo I remember what I purchased, how much I paid, and why I purchased it. The two pink chairs should look familiar. I still have those but they are in my boutique/ home office now. My mother found those at a Goodwill store if you can believe it!

The gold curtains are from Walmart and I still have that giant floral arrangement. I paid only $10 for that thing! My mother-in-law’s friend sold it to me. I adored it and still do. I still have that as well. It should look familiar. It is in my sitting room on the left side of me if you watch my Youtube videos. I replace the flowers every couple of years.

As I stare at it I realize that I was a “grandmillienial” at 25 and maybe younger. I remember sharing my bedroom in high school in one of my blog posts. I had “old lady” stuff then.

But I do know that as time has passed my style has changed a bit. In this photo, you will notice that there is no blue and white. I didn’t own any.  I did start to notice it at this time. I see other things in this photo that are not there that I love now, and it just brings a conversation back to my mind.

I had a dear friend tell me that every 10 years your style will change and I continue to believe that she is right. So what do you all think? Has your home decor style changed in the last decade? If so what did you love back then that you don’t now?

Leave a comment below. I would love to know. Have a great weekend!

    Hi, Mrs. Shockley:

June is my favorite month. I really hope it doesn’t go by too quickly! I also became a homeowner at age 25. I have to agree that every 10 years your style will change. I was just telling my husband we need to replace an art canvas in our living room that’s been up for nearly a decade. I am tired of looking at it. I’ve been on Wayfair this week searching for something new. I wanted to ask how you’re settling into your new office and whether you’re working from home much anymore?

      Hi Kelsie,
You were a homeowner at age 25 too? How fantastic! I hope you do find something for your living room. Finding that perfect piece of art is always hard. You want to love what you are looking at. Especially if it is going to be there for a while.
I am settling quite well in my new office! Honestly, I do love it, Kelsie! Thank you so much for asking! We are still working from home for now but since I got promoted I have been in the office about 4 days a week now. I think it will be coming to an end here very soon. What about you? Are you in the office more?

So glad to hear you’re all set up in your new office! I’m in the office about 2 days a week now. Since the pandemic, we are now given more freedom to work from home. Although it’s not the popular opinion, I actually enjoy going in most days.

I think that working from home will be offered more to everyone now. I know most of my co-workers are already asking for 2 telework days a week. So we will see.

I agree with every 10 years your style evolves, but not entirely unless you have no idea who and what you are. There are modifications that happen as we age but we stay true to ourselves, once we learn who we are. I’m the same as I’ve always been. I do make changes. When I used to have social media everyone home looked the same. Shiplap, farmhouse, grey and white marble kitchens, shabby chic, silver/diamond/sparkle glam and now they are all gutting their homes for black white minimalist aesthetic. In a few years they’ll gut their homes again for whatever is on trend. Granted that may be their job as social media influencers, yet it seems inauthentic. That speaks volumes to me as you are unsure of what you actually want. My great grandma, who is such a vibrant inspiration to me had the same furniture when I was a child that she had when my mom was a child. She would have pieces repaired if necessary and reupholstered. It was the same taste but perhaps refreshed or update. It was still her so not a total change. When you know yourself you need not follow trends. It takes time to learn. Your style Mrs Shockley is the same with some additions like blue and white porcelain. I think it’s lovely. It’s very much like my great grandma and I have that taste too. I don’t think it changes but evolves🌷😉💗

      Hey Ms. Tracey!
So agree! If you have no idea of who you are things will stay the same. I also agree about everyone’s home. I don’t want all white everything! That would drive me nuts. I love having different colors and textures. It shows thought and character.
I, like you, am waiting for the next trend. We will see what comes up next. Thank you so much for the kind words. I do hope that my style continues to evolve.
