“When we are true to ourselves and to others when our character is one of integrity, we have the quality of being authentic. Our personality is genuine, absolute, and reliable, and therefore worthy of trust and credibility. When we believe in ourselves, we are free to grow in our own soil, in the direction of our pure nature, which is grace-filled.”

Cooking is ~ A list of why cooking is Beautiful…

I jump on Amazon from time to time to check out new books. I have always been quite fascinated with how the French live. (see my blog entry here about how I am inspired)

I recently saw this book called ” French Women Don’t Get Fat”.  So I took a “peek” inside and found this great list called “Cooking is”. I think that it reminds us of how important home-cooked meals are and how to enjoy our lives. I had to share this list….

~ Cooking is an act of love, for sure, as those of us who’ve cooked all our lives know that to spoil others is a great source of pleasure, even though for some who cook dinner every night it may sometimes seem like a chore.

~ Cooking is self-expression, a way of finding the aromas, colors, and flavors that define your personality.

~ Cooking is contemplative experience reaching and probing deep in our thoughts and emotions.

~ Cooking is memory, as it links to a person’s culture and values. Whenever we eat something, the taste and memory of all the times we have eaten that dish live in the present.

~ Cooking is seduction, from creating the atmosphere and setting, to the giving of what is loved and shared, to the cumulative engagement of the senses and being.

~ Cooking is relaxing, and focusing on your preparation can be a getaway from daily stress.

~ Cooking is good for the mind, good for mental health, using your hands to craft a delicious and complete finished dish or meal.

~ Cooking is conversation, as a meal gathers values, tastes, rituals, and words that are passed on for generations and play an extremely important social role not only over holiday seasons.

~ Cooking is reading from a recipe in a cookbook or on the Internet, thus absorption and learning.

~ Cooking is pleasure and an integral part of what is called l’equilibre alimentaire, a balanced approach to eating.
~ Cooking is the reward for shopping.
~ Cooking is healthy.
~ Cooking is slimming.
I really enjoyed this list. It is much longer! I will be purchasing this book. I am sure I will enjoy it!
Thanks for reading!!!

~The Cakebake Shop

Lately I have been on this “let’s find beautiful places around my city” kick” and it seems that people keep giving me information about new consignment stores, restaurants, home decor stores, just everything! And the funny thing is I have not announced this to anyone.

This information just keeps coming to me! It’s great and a little strange. I guess that James Allen quote that I heard years ago might have some truth in it. “You attract what you are”. So since I am searching for beautiful things they are finding their way to me.

One of my co-workers told me about this wonderful little place in Broad Ripple in Indianapolis. It is called the Cake Bake Shop. My husband and I decided to go there for lunch and it was a wonderful experience.

I loved every bit of it. See my gorgeous photos below…

Principles of a Gracious Life ~ Contentment

My home

“If we can attain satisfaction with what we have in our lives, it will bring us happiness and grace. In our present condition, if we’re able to solve our inner problems and affirm life, we will be in harmony with our expectations. In any situation, we can be appeased and self-contained, and gratify ourselves with realistic desires. Whenever we make the best of whatever situation we find ourselves in, we are essentially living a gracious life.”

Thirty Chic Days ~ Being private at home

I have shared on the blog how much I love to read! This summer I am reading two books. I always read two books at a time. It’s a habit I developed while I was in college. This summer I have decided to read Bella Tuscany: The Sweet Life in Italy by Frances Mayes and Thirty Chic Days; Practical Inspiration for a Beautiful Life by Fiona Ferris.

I really dove right into this book! It is an easy read and it is delightful! One section of the book that I found to be quite interesting was the part about “being private at home”. Here is what Fiona said, “When you are at home with your beloved and your family, create a little mystery around yourself. Close the door when you brush your teeth, don’t blabber on about every little thing you’re thinking of, and don’t ask your husband which shoes or jacket looks better.

Instead, choose for yourself then make an entrance into the room, accepting a compliment with pleasure. It is sometimes easier to learn mystique from someone who doesn’t have any. Do you want to be that person that others learn from? It’s different with family and close friends, but even then you will want to keep your marriage relationship details private. It is many men’s horror that their other half will blab embarrassing details to their friends or family about them.

I know of people who don’t tell family members private information because they know they will be unable to keep it to themselves. Remember, it’s not only that one person you are sharing with, but it’s whoever they might tell also. It is respectful of others to not spill their secrets, insecurities, or private happenings.

A foolproof way of knowing if it’s okay to relay information about a person is- would I say this if the person was standing right next to me listening to the conversation as well? Or, would I send this email if the person I’m mentioning was reading it over my shoulder? I love this test because it works every time.

Isn’t this wonderful? Not to say that most of us don’t know these “social rules” anyway but it is a reminder to be private. I wrote about “Keeping an Air of Mystery” earlier this year.

Keeping mystery at home is a wonderful thing. I believe that there are certain things that your kids should not see you do. In the evening when I am getting dressed for bed, I shut our bedroom door. I do not want my daughter to see my naked body! I think that is terrible. I have some friends and family who don’t mind but that is their business, not mine.

Learning to be an “elegant bearing woman” is very hard these days but we must continue to press forward and learn how to be leaders in this area. I hope you enjoyed this and I hope you will pick up Thirty Chic Days. It is wonderful…..

Charmed by Charlie ~ 2

Finding beautiful things is always fun! So I was really excited when I walked into the Charming Charlie store in the Florida Mall and found these two great accessories.

This is the Wallaby Mama Bag in Bag tote. It is a great size and the perfect pink blush color! Oh gosh, I just love it! The bumble bee brooch is from Banana Republic. I wrote about it here.

The second item that I bought was this hummingbird brooch.
And I could not resist their Royal Bee Brooch

Charming Charlie is a great place to get wonderful accessories at great prices! The brooches were only $10 each! Seriously,….. it’s just great! I hope you check out their site or their gorgeous store. If you want to read part 1 of Charmed by Charlie see it here.
Enjoy!

My Fruit Fusion Water Bottle

Goodness gracious it has been so hot here in Indiana! I know we shouldn’t complain because we have horrible winters here but I am sorry it’s hot!

I had a visit with my O.B. recently and I told her that I have been dizzy lately. Without blinking an eye she said, “You don’t drink enough water”. I just sighed. So I made a mental note to start working on that immediately.

My family and I were at the mall and went into Dick’s Sporting Goods. Not really my kinda of shopping but I have to honor my husband to. He always goes where I want. We were just looking around when I spotted the Fruit Fusion Water Bottle by Carrie Underwood.

This is a photo of my bottle at home. We purchased bags of frozen fruit and it works wonderfully. The frozen fruit keeps it cold and flavors the water at the same time. I absolutely love it and carry it everywhere I go.
If you are not a big water drinker maybe you should try a fruit fusion water bottle. It may change your mind.
